Causes

Autoimmune oophoritis

  • Autoimmune oophoritis is a rare cause of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI).
  • It happens when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the ovaries causing inflammation, atrophy, fibrosis and ovarian dysfunction.  
  • The main symptoms are
    • Irregular menses or Amenorrhea
    • Symptoms related to ovarian cysts such as abdominal cramping, bloating, nausea and vomiting
  • It may occur as part of APS-1, APS-2
  • It has also been associated with lupus, pernicious anemia, myasthenia gravis. [1]
