Old school categorization
- Simple gastritis (catarrhal), which is the most common form of gastritis
- Crusive or destructive gastritis: when the patient has drunk strong acidic or alkaline substances
- Phlegmatous gastritis: thickening of the stomach wall + leukocyte infiltration in the stomach tissue
- Fibrinous gastritis: Infiltration of fibrin in the stomach following scarlet fever or other infections

- The most common symptom is upper abdominal pain (Dyspepsia).
- Other possible symptoms include nausea and vomiting, bloating, loss of appetite and heartburn.

Less common causes include
- Alcohol, smoking, cocaine, severe illness, radiation therapy
- Autoimmune problems such as Autoimune gasritis and Crohn's disease.
4 Gastritis vs gastropathy
- Both are conditions that affect the stomach lining, also known as the mucosa.
- In gastritis, the stomach lining is inflamed.
- In gastropathy, the stomach lining is damaged, but little or no inflammation is present
5 Gastritis vs Gastroparesis
- Gastritis is strictly a histological or tissue diagnosis of inflammation of the stomach inner lining which may or may not manifest symptomatically.
- Gastroparesis defines a symptomatic delay in stomach emptying resulting in bloating, abdominal pain and sometimes vomiting.
6 Gastritis vs Gastric ulcer
- Gastritis is irritation and inflammation of the stomach lining. This means the lining is red and swollen. It can cause shallow sores in the stomach lining called erosions.
- An ulcer is a deeper open sore in the lining of the stomach.
