Functions

  • It receives general somatic sensory fibers from Tonsils, Pharynx, Middle ear and Posterior tongue
  • It receives taste sensory fibers from the posterior tongue
  • It receives visceral sensory fibers from the carotid bodies, carotid sinus.
  • It supplies parasympathetic fibers to the parotid gland
  • It supplies motor fibers to stylopharyngeus muscle
  • It contributes to the pharyngeal plexus.

Clinic

  • Damage: Loss of taste sensation to the posterior one third of the tongue, and impaired swallowing.
  • Examination: Testing Gag reflex, Swallow, Cough, Speech
