Definition

A very deep and seemingly bottomless hole or space, like a chasm, gulf, or pit. It can also refer to the deepest part of the ocean.

Figuratively, "abyss" can also describe:

• A vast emptiness or void, either physical or emotional.
• A terrible or hopeless situation that seems impossible to escape.

Think of it as something incredibly deep and dark, either literally a deep hole in the ground or figuratively a deep feeling of despair.
