TSP HAM, Tropical spastic paraparesis HTLV 1 associated myelopathy entities

HTLV-I causes tropical spastic paraparesis, also called TSP/ HAM.

Typical symptoms include

  • Leg weakness
  • Back pain
  • Bladder dysfunction.
  • The cardinal finding of TSP/HAM is spasticity
  • All affected individuals eventually demonstrate signs of spasticity in the lower limbs. Although the majority of HTLV-1 seropositive persons never seem to develop TSP/HAM [1]
