Interstitial cystitis

Clinic

• IC is a type of bladder pain syndrome (BPS)
• Chronic pain in the bladder and pelvic floor with unknown cause.
• Symptoms include
  • Urine urgency
  • Frequency (esp noctural)
  • Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Urinary hesitancy (needing to wait for the urinary stream to begin, often caused by pelvic floor dysfunction and tension)

• IC/BPS is associated with Depression
• Other conditions which can produce similar symptoms include overactive bladder, urinary tract infection (UTI), sexually transmitted infections, prostatitis, endometriosis and bladder cancer.
• There is no cure for interstitial cystitis and management of this condition can be challenging.
