Clinic
- Kuru is the first human transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) or prion miasm identified
- It is a uniformly fatal cerebellar ataxic syndrome, usually followed by choreiform and athetoid movements.

- Its important regions are Mind and CNS.
- KRU is a very rare, incurable and fatal neurodegenerative disorder that was formerly common among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea.
- KRU is a form of (TSE) which leads to tremors and Incoordination.
- Body tremors is a classic symptom of the disease (Titubation /Nodding movement of the head or body)
- It is also known as the "laughing sickness" due to the pathologic bursts of laughter
Three stages
- First stage
- Unsteady stance and gait
- Decreased muscle control
- Dysarthria
- Tremors
- Second stage
- Incapable of walking without support and experiences
- Ataxia
- Severe tremors
- Emotional instability / Uncontrolled and sporadic laughter
- Depression
- Tendon reflexes are still intact at this stage of the disease.
- Third stage
- Ataxia progress to the point where it is no longer possible to sit up without support
- Dysphagia
- Inability to speak
- Unresponsive to their surroundings despite maintaining consciousness
- Chronic ulcerated wounds that can be easily infected
- Pneumonia or other secondary infections.
