- Also known as tubulointerstitial nephritis
- It is inflammation of renal interstitium, which consists of a collection of cells, extracellular matrix, and fluid surrounding the renal tubules.
- Renal interstitium participate in the fluid and electrolyte exchange as well as endocrine functions.
Signs / Symptoms
- Fever is the most common, occurring in 30-50% of patients, particularly those with drug-induced interstitial nephritis.
- Nausea, vomiting, fatigue, lack of appetite, and weight loss.
- Flank pain, Pain with urination
- Hematuria
- Hypertension
- Classic triad of symptoms: Rash + Arthralgia + Eosinophilila (5-10% of patients)
Causes
- Dynamic: Infection
- Static: Reaction to drugs such as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, or antibiotics
