Calc ₳ Lyc ₳ Sul
SULFUR and CALCAREA CARB. are substances of mineral origin; LYCOPODIUM is a substance of plant origin. At first glance, it is difficult to guess the relationships that could exist between these three of our greatest polychrests, however, on a clinical level, these three remedies have many similarities and often present themselves together in the mind of the practitioner before a given case. KENT noted that patients often progress from the SULFUR stage to the LYCOPODIUM stage via the CALCAREA CARB stage. to return to SULFUR. SULFUR follows LYCOPODIUM, but LYCOPODIUM should not be prescribed IMMEDIATELY AFTER SULFUR. PATERSON pointed out that when SULFUR, CALCAREA CARB. where LYCOPODIUM is indicated, we find in the stools the same germ, B. MORGAN (from Bach). It is therefore profitable to study these three remedies at the same time.

9 - SLEEP (modality):
10 - SOLITUDE:
CALCAREA CARBONICA is quite sociable. He often seeks company, which gives him an air of good nature.
LYCOPODIUM is a rather curious patient. He hates company, crowds, and yet he cannot bear to be truly alone. The ideal condition for him is to be alone in a room, but with the presence of an intimate in a neighboring room.
SULFUR , contrary to what one might think, does not really look for company, without hating it. He is as good in society as when he is alone. He is a being who belongs to the dilated type, who is turned outward, which means that he generally succeeds well in life.
11 - PRESSURE:
LYCOPODIUM is very sensitive to pressure. The Lycopodium patient is always worse when he lies on his sick side.
CALCAREA CARB . is to a lesser degree. Sometimes he is even relieved by the pressure.
12 - TOUCH:
SULFUR and LYCOPODIUM , like CHINA and LACHESIS, are very sensitive to touch.
Superficial contact is pleasant to CALCAREA CARB .
13 - DISCHARGES (modality):
SULFUR and LYCOPODIUM (especially Sulfur) are improved when there is a flow, any elimination or an eruption.
CALCAREA CARB . is also sometimes, other times it is aggravated, particularly when there is loss of organic fluid. He feels better when he is constipated! Mercurius and PSORINUM are the only two other remedies to present this latter modality.
II - MENTALITY
The SULFUR subject is essentially IRRITABLE . He has a bad temper and responds with aggression to aggression.
CALCAREA CARB . is above all FEARFUL. He is full of apprehension. He is afraid of everything, of losing his mind, of being ruined, of contagious diseases, of being observed, etc...
LYCOPODIUM is ANGRY. He explodes at the slightest annoyance. Lycopodium lays down the law like Mercurius wherever it is found. Only PULSATILLA can get along with him and you know that Pulsatilla is his complement. However, despite his naughty appearance, Lycopodium is also a coward. Like Calcarea carb., it is filled with apprehension. Sometimes he is sad, especially in the morning.
This is how, faced with a given situation, for example, a minor car collision, SULFUR will be aggressive and will not give in. CALCAREA CARB . will be conciliatory and will give in because he is above all afraid of the consequences, he is afraid, for example, of being summoned to the police station. LYCOPODIUM will scream at the moment, especially if he is accompanied by his wife, because he is proud and because he is basically aggressive and angry, but, returning home, he will be prey to terrible anxiety and will regret for making a scene. He already sees himself before the police commissioner or the Justice of the Peace. He will wait for the summons which will never come.
III - SENSATIONS
Professor BOGER, of Chicago, teaches that when studying a question of materia medica or a case, one must begin by seeing if one of the seven principal sensations is not present. There are many other sensations, but the presence of one of these seven sensations is essential. These sensations are: BURNING (heat), CRUMBING (colic), CUTTING, BURSTING (splitting), BRUISHING, PULSING (throbbing), and THIRST sensation.

IV - OBJECTIVE ASPECTS
1 - PHYSICAL ASPECT:
SULFUR in lean thin, stooped and tends to lean against something, to sit. He lets himself go, his clothes are not neat and are dirty except when he has a wife Arsenicum who takes care of him.
Nowadays, everyone knows the SULFUR GRAS type, described by Doctor Henri BERNARD. It is a well-built, robust and resistant individual, rich in color, rather brown in hair, pigmenting easily in the sun. It is sometimes dull and heavy.
CALCAREA CARBONICA is short, thick, fat and round. Its tissues are soft. He seems strong and yet he is not.
LYCOPODIUM is thin and has poorly developed muscles. He is physically weak and his weakness does not allow him to achieve what his mind designs. MERCURIUS, who resembles him in his dictatorial side, is much more powerful than him and has more class.
2 - NERVOUSNESS:
SULFUR is lively in his reactions, but he is lazy and careless.
CALCAREA CARB . is quite lymphatic and hates being disturbed in his habits. He is slow to take action, but he is perseverant in his undertakings. He is generally loyal to his doctor. But make no mistake, the Calcarea carb. subject, despite the slowness of its reflexes, is often quite male and is capable of aggression and of responding violently to aggression. Calc. carb. sometimes has a bad temper, more often he is gentle.
LYCOPODIUM is a nervous-bilious. He is very lively. He is always revolted, indignant, ready to get angry.
3 - FACIES:
SULFUR has unhealthy, poorly washed skin and exudes a bad odor. His face is covered with acne, blackheads, pimples of all kinds. The upper lips are too red. I always point out to little girls that they will never need a stick of rouge later, and this compliment always pleases them, as it does the parents. The eyelids are also red, like the ears and nostrils. Anyway, all of Sulfur's orifices are red.
The CALCAREA CARB facies . is round, greasy, chalky and sweaty. The upper lip is swollen and the pupils are dilated (like its acute complement BELLADONNA).
The appearance of LYCOPODIUM is yellowish, especially at the temples, emaciated, wrinkled, looking older than its age. Its expression is very mobile, sometimes agitated with tics (Ars., Dy. co.). The eyes are hollow and ringed with blue. The face turns red after meals. The teeth are yellow.
In acute states, the forehead wrinkles at the root of the nose and there is a fluttering of the wings of the nose (ANT. TART. and PHOSPH.).
4 - SECRETIONS, COLOR, ODOR:
SULFUR secretions are IRRITANT and have a bad odor. Urine is frequent, but small in quantity. Menses are late, scanty and short-lived. Leucorrhea is acidic and irritating.
CALCAREA CARB secretions. are acidic, ABUNDANT AND SAFE. Periods are early, heavy and last too long. The Baby Calc. gives off a SAFE SMELL like RHEUM and HEPAR babies. HE SWEATS A PROFUSE OF HIS HEAD AT NIGHT AND COMPLETELY WETS HIS PILLOW.
LYCOPODIUM secretions are dense, viscous and hyperacid. Lycopodium urinates often and little at a time. He is more likely to retain urine than incontinence. Urine often leaves a deposit of RED SAND. This symptom is extremely characteristic of Lycopodium. Periods are usually late. Leucorrhea is most often acidic. Milk is scarce.
V - AFFECTED PARTS - LATERALITIES
SULFUR mainly affects:
1 - TRAFFIC:
VENOUS CIRCULATION and PORTAL CIRCULATION. VARICOSE VEINS. HEMORRHOIDS.
2 - THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:
It does not matter whether it is affected in one way or another, the important thing is that it is affected at the same time as certain other parts of the body (concomitant symptoms). I will still tell you some of the most important characteristics so that you recognize the remedy more quickly, but do not forget that a particular symptom, however important and marked it may be, only exists in relation to the all symptoms. No single symptom has an absolute value.
Sulfur drinks a lot and eats little. Sensation of sudden hunger, hollowness in the epigastric region, especially around 11 a.m. Sore abdomen, improved by pressure. Worsened by milk. Lots of acidity and sure belching. Big appetite, Sulfur's face lights up as soon as you ask him to tell you some addresses of good restaurants.
3 - THE MUCOSAL AND SEROUS MEMBRANES:
RED AND BURNING CONJUNCTIVAES. CHRONIC DRY CATARRH on the side of the nose. DRY Scabs THAT BLEED EASILY. CORYZA. NASAL OBSTRUCTION, sometimes on one side, sometimes on the other, alternately. STOMACH BURN. BURNING IN THE URETHRA DURING URINATION. BRONCHIC CATARRH. BRONCHIC RALES. PLEURAL EXUDATION.
4 - THE RECTUM:
RECTAL PAIN. HEMORRHOIDS. REDNESS AND ITCHING AROUND THE ANUS. DIARRHEA EARLY IN THE MORNING FORCING THE SICK TO GET OUT OF BED (NATRUM SULFUR: diarrhea in the morning, immediately after getting up).
5 - THE SKIN:
It is DRY, ROUGH, UNHEALTHY, WITH SCALES. PRURITIS, especially at night, aggravated by heat, in spring and in humid weather. THE Slightest Abrasion STARTS TO SUPPURATE AND THE WOUND IS SLOW TO HEAL. Burning when the patient scratches, aggravated by draft, wind and especially WASHING. ALTERNATING ERUPTIONS WITH OTHER AILMENTS, asthma for example. Blooming boils. Prurigo. Erysipelas, rhagades, eczema. Ulcers.
6 - THE VERTEX AND THE SOLE OF THE FEET:
Sulfur complains of intense heat in the vertex and soles of the feet, especially at night. Sick Sulfur takes his feet out of the blankets and even puts them under the tap to cool them off.
7 - Finally, Sulfur affects the joints and glands. Rheumatism. DROP. Low back pain. Lymphadenopathy.
CALCAREA CARBONICA focuses on:
1 - NUTRITION:
a - First its action on THE GLANDS AND NODS: the LIVER is painful when the patient leans forward. The GALLBLADDER is filled with STONES. Clarke says that when one prescribes Calcarea carb. In the midst of an attack of hepatic colic, instant pain relief can be provided. Prescribed during an attack of renal colic, the same spectacular result is obtained. The presence of gallstones is an excellent indication for MORGAN-PURE (PATERSON) according to PATERSON, and the presence of stones in the kidneys, a sure indication for MORGAN-GAERTNER (PATERSON), again according to PATERSON. When Calcarea carb. is indicated, MORGAN is found in the stools. BREASTS are swollen and painfully tight before menstruation. The testicles and ovaries are less affected in Calc. carb. Dysfunction of the HYPERTROPHIATED thyroid and pituitary gland.
The submandibular glands are enlarged. Parotid gland fistula. THE CERVICAL AND MESENTERIC NODES ARE HYPERTROPHIATED and painful. SO ARE THE TONSILS.
b - Action on bones: Strong framework. Big head. DELAY IN FONTANELLES CLOSURE, teething, walking. EXOSTOSES. Stimulating action on the periosteum.
c - Action on the SKIN: PETECHIAL ERUPTIONS. Urticaria improved in fresh air. Warts on the face and hands. Moist eczema of the scalp, but elsewhere the eruptions are dry (moist in Lycopodium). Thick crusts. Frostbite. Boils. As with Sulfur, Calc's skin. carb. is unhealthy, sluggish. Wounds ulcerate and are slow to heal.
2 - BLOOD:
CALCAREA CARB. increases blood coagulability and has a favorable effect on hemostasis. Anemia, but the patient has a false appearance of plethora.
3 - THE CHEST (right lung):
Calc. carb. has SHORT BREATH and gets out of breath a lot WHEN HE ClimbS THE STAIRS. He has SUFFOCATION ATTACKS. THE THORAX IS VERY SENSITIVE TO TOUCH, PERCUSSION AND PRESSURE. Severe dyspnea. PAINLESS HOARSHNESS IN THE MORNING.
4 - THE HEART:
WEAKNESS OF THE HEART. The heart could be affected in many other ways: palpitations with a feeling of cold and tightness in the chest after the removal of an eruption, but the important thing is that it is affected. We don't need to go into details right away when we approach a case. Note the LOCALIZED SENSATION OF COLD which is very characteristic of Calcarea carb., particularly at the vertex (Sulfur: sensation of heat at the vertex).
5 - CHILDREN:
Doctor BORLAND writes in his "Children's Types" that the majority of English babies are Calcarea carb babies. and that he always begins by wondering if he is not in the presence of a child Calcarea carb. every time he approaches a child's case. He is a child who is fat, with soft flesh, a big head and a big belly. The tonsils are enlarged and the child is late in everything, in teething, in walking, in closing his fontanels. You should know that Calcarea child is not necessarily fat and that there is a type of Calcarea carb child. who is thin, emaciated, athreptic.
LYCOPODIUM acts on:
1 - NUTRITION:
a - THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: LIVER sensitive and congested. Atrophied liver. LIVER FAILURE Gallstones and kidney stones (like Calc.). TASTE ON. ACIDITY. HUNGRY BUT QUICKLY SATISFIED. INCOMPLETE ERUCTION. ACID ERUCTIONS THAT BURN THE THROAT FOR HOURS. ANXIETY FELT IN THE EPIGASTRA. NOISE AEROCOLIA. Sore lower abdomen. Colic in babies in the evening. Alternation of diarrhea and constipation. HARD, DIFFICULT, SMALL and incomplete Stools. DESIRE FOR HOT FOOD, DESIRE FOR SWEET THINGS.
b - THE SYSTEM CARRIES: HAEMORROIDS, VERY SENSITIVE TO TOUCH, improved by hot sitz baths. (I should not tell you these modalities, all the symptoms of Lycopodium, rheumatic pains, sore throat are improved by heat.)
c - The skin. DROUGHT ; palms of the hands, vagina, folds of the knuckles, nipples, anus like A LIVE. Eruptions that suppurate. Boils that recur. Erysipelas. Psoriasis. ACNE. VISCOUS, FETID SWEAT, especially from the feet and armpits.
ONE FOOT COLDER THAN THE OTHER.
2 - THE URO-GENITAL SYSTEM:
Kidney pain before urination; stop after urination. Flow is SLOW TO COME, must force. Retention of urine. NOCTURNAL POLYURIA. BRICK RED SEDIMENT. The child cries before urinating. GENITAL IMPOTENCE. When faced with a patient who complains of impotence, you should always start by thinking about Lycopodium which is still the most often indicated remedy. Do not start by prescribing AGNUS CASTUS systematically. Lycopodium acts so selectively on the digestive system and the urogenital system that it is rare that the symptoms of one or the other system are missing when Lycopodium is really indicated.
3 - THE THROAT:
SORE THROAT IMPROVED BY HOT DRINKS. Swelling and suppuration of the tonsils. Ulceration of the tonsils STARTING ON THE RIGHT. Diphtheria. THE FALSE MEMBRANE DEVELOPS FROM RIGHT TO LEFT. WORSE BY COLD DRINKS. Ulceration of the vocal cords. Tuberculous laryngitis, especially at the ulceration stage.
4 - THE CHEST:
Bronchitis in children, the chest is filled with bronchial rales. Neglected pneumonia, at the HEPATIZATION stage, with intense dyspnea and BEATING OF THE WINGS OF THE NOSE and PRESENCE OF BRONCHIC RALES.
5 - THE OVARIES:
Mainly the right ovary.
6 - THE BRAIN:
Brain fatigue. Lycopodium is one of the best remedies when the patient begins to show signs of brain paralysis. The patient lies in a stupor, the lower jaw drops; the bronchi are clogged with mucus and the eyes are filled with mucus. As you see, Lycopodium is not only a remedy for chronic conditions, it is also a very important remedy for acute conditions like diphtheria, pneumonia, etc...
LATERALITIES:
Right side: CALC, LYC. from right to left: LYC. (from left to right LACHESIS).
Left side: SULFUR.
We deliberately did not go into details. Medical subjects are too rich, too detailed and the student of homeopathy always has too much tendency to see the detail to the detriment of the whole. The detail, however important it may be, only exists in relation to a background, which is why we have only tried to give you an overall picture of the remedies and to indicate to you the most salient points which really help to the individualization of the remedy. Professor BOGER wrote that the main cause of error lies in the exaggerated importance given to a detail, a keynote, or even a mental symptom without taking into account the whole.
Note : In incurable patients, Paterson advises prescribing the constitutional remedy, Calc. carb. for example, in low dilution (6 CH) and repeat the remedy daily, 1 to 3 times a day, combining it with a single dose of the corresponding intestinal Nosode, MORGAN-PURE in the case of Calcarea carb. The agony is thus made sweeter. Paterson has declared to his intimates that this process has never failed in his hands. This way of proceeding has been confirmed by other authors ("BHJ", Vol. LV, No. 4, October 1966, "Book reviews", by Dr GB, p. 242). We can proceed in the same way in all rebellious cases which continually relapse. The selection of the intestinal Nosode is done using the table established by Paterson and published in my book on "Intestinal Nosodes", on page 52. Paterson is a Hahnemannian and a rigorous unicist.
