Ambr, Ambra grisea

Ambra grisea (Ambr) is a remedy which is a complex, waxy organic substance composed mainly of ambrein, a triterpenoid alcohol (approximately 25–45%), along with cholesterol, epicoprosterol, fatty acids, and other organic compounds. Ambrein is largely responsible for its characteristic chemical properties. It is a rare substance formed in the digestive tract of the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). It is believed to develop around indigestible materials, such as squid beaks, and is eventually expelled into the sea, where it undergoes oxidation and ageing. Historically, ambergris was used in traditional medicine as an aromatic and stimulating substance. It was employed for nervous disorders, faintness, weakness, digestive complaints, and as an aphrodisiac. It was also highly valued in perfumery as a fragrance fixative.
