- Primitive reflexes are automatic movements that are directed by the brain-stem and need no cortical involvement (thought).
- They are essential for survival and development in the womb and in the early months of life until they become obsolete when higher functioning brain processes take place.
- At this point, they need to be inhibited or the proper neurological organization of the more sophisticated centers of the brain do not develop.
