Sporadic necrotizing encephalitis

Clinic

• The clinical syndrome is often characterized by the rapid onset of fever, headache, seizures, focal neurologic signs, and impaired consciousness.

• ANE or sometimes necrotizing encephalitis or infection-induced acute encephalopathy (IIAE) is a rare type of encephalopathy that occurs following a viral infection.
  • Influenza A and B
  • HHV-6
  • HSV-1 is the most common cause of sporadic necrotizing encephalitis
• Multiple subtypes, associated with specific genes have been found.

Symptoms

• Typical symptoms of an infection, such as fever, cough, congestion, vomiting, and diarrhea, for a few days.
• Following flu-like symptoms, neurological problems such as
  • Seizure
  • Hallucination
  • Ataxia
  • Abnormal muscle tone
  • Coma
