Researches
- Recent reports offer evidence that HHV-6 reactivation may underlie a characteristic limbic encephalitis syndrome following hematopoietic cell transplant. The cardinal features of this syndrome include memory loss, insomnia, EEG evidence of temporal lobe seizure activity, MRI signal intensity abnormalities of the mesial temporal lobe, and the syndrome of inappropriate release of antidiuretic hormone. Possible associations of HHV-6 with meningoencephalitis, mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, and MS. [1]
- The reactivation of HHV-6 in drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome is not a coincidental phenomenon. HHV-6 reactivation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome, esp in the latter half of the clinical symptoms. It sometimes leads to the severe complications of drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome, such as encephalitis and type 1 diabetes mellitus. In conclusion, drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome is a complex disease composed of drug allergy and HSV-6. [2]
- Myocarditis: HHV-6 is one of the most important pathogens of viral myocarditis, and is often responsible for sudden death in young adults. A 59-year-old immunocompetent man died of serious lymphocytic myocarditis, and his peripheral blood sample showed HHV-6 DNAemia. [3], [4]
- Although latent HHV-6 and HHV-7 were both more prevalent in the whole blood of fibromyalgia patients than in controls, only HHV-6 was found to be significantly correlated with nerve fiber damage severity. 51% of fibromyalgia patients had detectable HHV-6 DNA in whole blood compared to just 6% of controls
