- Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad cow disease, is an incurable and inevitably fatal neurodegenerative disease of cattle.
- Spread to humans is believed to result in variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (NVCJD).
- It is a type of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE).
