Clinic
- Simply it is inflammation of the thyroid gland.
- It has two stages initially:
- Acutely thyroid cells are damaged therefore the thyroid hormone released excessively within the bloodstream causing symptoms of thyrotoxicosis
- In the second stage, there is thyroid gland insufficiency / Hypothyroidism
Signs / Symptoms
Common
- Fatigue, Weight gain, Feeling "fuzzy headed"
- Depression
- Dry skin
- Constipation
Hypothyroidism
- Legs swelling
- Vague aches and pains
- Concentration impairment
- Puffiness around the eyes
- Bradycardia
- Hypothermia
- Incipient heart failure
Thyrotoxicosis phase
- Weight loss,
- Irritability, anxiety, insomnia, Tachycardia
- Fatigue
Causes
- Autoimmune disease: APS-2, Hashimoto's thyroiditis
- Some drugs: Drug-induced thyroiditis, Radiation-induced thyroiditis,
- Viral infections
- Postpartum thyroiditis
- Subacute thyroiditis
- Silent thyroiditis
- Acute thyroiditis
- Riedel's thyroiditis
