Thyroiditis

Clinic

• Simply it is inflammation of the thyroid gland.
• It has two stages initially:

1. Acutely thyroid cells are damaged therefore the thyroid hormone released excessively within the bloodstream causing symptoms of thyrotoxicosis
2. In the second stage, there is thyroid gland insufficiency / Hypothyroidism

Signs / Symptoms

Common

• Fatigue, Weight gain, Feeling "fuzzy headed"
• Depression
• Dry skin
• Constipation

Hypothyroidism

• Legs swelling
• Vague aches and pains
• Concentration impairment
• Puffiness around the eyes
• Bradycardia
• Hypothermia
• Incipient heart failure

Thyrotoxicosis phase

• Weight loss,
• Irritability, anxiety, insomnia, Tachycardia
• Fatigue

Causes

• Autoimmune disease: APS-2, Hashimoto's thyroiditis
• Some drugs: Drug-induced thyroiditis, Radiation-induced thyroiditis,
• Viral infections
• Postpartum thyroiditis
• Subacute thyroiditis
• Silent thyroiditis
• Acute thyroiditis
• Riedel's thyroiditis
