- TMD or TMJD is an umbrella term covering chronic pain and dysfunction of Mastication muscles and Temporomandibular joints
- TMD has been considered as a type of musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, or rheumatological disorder.
- It has also been called a functional pain syndrome, and a psychogenic disorder.
- TMD may be named as a "central sensitivity syndrome"
- The most important disease that has been classified under TMD umbrella are
- Facial arthromyalgia
- Myofacial pain dysfunction syndrome
- Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD)
- Myofacial pain dysfunction
- Masticatory myalgia
- Mandibular dysfunction
- Costen's syndrome
Sign / Symptoms
- Pain
- Chronic orofacial pain / Headache possibly in occipital region (Other pains including Migraine, Tension headache)
- Burning mouth syndrome
- Atypical facial pain / Myofascial pain
- Atypical odontalgia
- Restricted mandibular movement
- Noises from TMJ during jaw movement.
Other signs Symptoms
- Hearing loss
- Tinnitus / Dizziness
- Sensation of malocclusion (Feeling that the teeth do not meet together properly).
- There is no single, globally accepted term or definition concerning this topic.
- TMDs have a range of causes and often co-occur with a number of overlapping medical conditions, including
- Headaches
- Fibromyalgia
- Back pain
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- About 20% to 30% of the adult population are affected to some degree.
